Unong Mine Rehabilitation

Unong Mine in Barangay Tinogboc was Semirara Island’s first open pit coal operations. It produced 12 million metric tons of coal in 1983 until 2000.

More than a decade since it closed, the mine area now has a lake that hosts meter-long eels, tilapia, and even some hawkbill sea turtles released in its brackish waters in 2011. The rim has become a wide band of green trees that line a 3-kilometer circumferential road.
